Bertram Allen today added to Ireland’s tally of top five places with a third in the Winning Round competition at Aachen, Germany this afternoon.

The Wexford-born rider, who celebrates his 22nd birthday a week before the beginning of the Dublin Horse Show on August 9, rode his long-term equine partner, the grey mare Molly Malone, in today’s class, and was one of 15 combinations to go clear to the Winning Round.

When Allen came through the gate for the second time, local rider Christian Ahlmann was already leading the competition on the grey stallion Caribis Z, with Switzerland’s Steve Guerdat in second aboard the mare Ulysse des Forets, and though faultlessly eating up ground in the huge five-star arena, Allen was just over a fifth of a second off Guerdat’s pace, and slotted into third, a place he held until the finish.

Cian O’Connor, who has already had two victories at Aachen this week, had one pole down in the Winning Round with the bay gelding Callisto, and had to settle for seventh place on this occasion.
