Cian O’Connor was in top competitive form at the world-famous five-star show in Aachen Germany today with a win on Callisto and a fourth place on Good Luck.

O’Connor rounded off the day with victory in the show’s two-phase competition, the Prize of Städte Region Aachen, Ireland’s first win of the week.

Fifth to jump in a star-studded international field of 45 combinations, the Meath-based rider laid down a time of 35.39 seconds on the bay gelding Callisto, and then had a long wait while the following 40 riders tried to make a dent in his effort.

Only Israel’s Daniel Bluman came within challenging distance, finishing on Apardi in a time of 36.14, while the USA’s Laura Kraut and Whitney took third place with a time of 36.14.

Earlier in the day both O’Connor and Bertram Allen with Molly Malone finished in the top five of the major 1m60 Prize of Europe jump off competition.

Allen had the edge on O’Connor by just three-hundredths of a second, taking third place and a prize of 15,000 euro, while O’Connor and Good Luck collected 10,000 euro for their fourth place.

The winner was Canada’s Olympic gold medallist Eric Lamaze with the mare Fine Lady (25,000 euro) while Germany’s Ludger Beerbaum and Chiara took 20,000 euro for their runner-up placing.

Only a tenth of a second separated the top four finishers.
