Nick Skelton dismounted Big Star for the last time today on the pairing’s retirement during a special interval at Royal Windsor Horse Show.

The Individual Gold winners at last year’s Rio Olympics were given a huge ovation by the spectators, and a message from the British rider’s youngest son Harry, in racing action elsewhere today, was read out.

In it Harry Skelton said that his proudest moment was when Nick and Dollar Girl won the World Cup in 1995.

Nick and Big star also won Team Gold at London 2012 and both horse and rider have triumphed over separate injury setbacks.

“You’ve been through so much between then and Rio 2016”, the message continued, with Harry describing the Rio success as the proudest day of his life. “I am the proudest son alive and so glad you’ve stopped at the top. I hope I will make you as proud as I am of you one day. See you later, love you, Harry.”
