Shane Sweetnam took fifth place this evening in the $50,000 Longines Cup at the five-star Hampton Classic Horse Show at Bridgehampton, New York.
Riding Main Road, on whom he won earlier in the week, the Irish rider was last to go in the jump-off and went in hot pursuit of the leaders but four faults in the process meant he had to settle for fifth place.
Sweetnam was one of eight combinations who qualified for the jump-off, with Ireland’s Richie Moloney just missing out with a time fault in the opening round on Button Sitte.
American Mattias Tromp on Avon set the target at 38.34 in the decider and it proved to be unmatchable, with Colombian Pablo Mejia Villa coming closest when slotting into second on Reglisse Top in 40.96. Third place went to USA’s Catherine Nicole Tyree and Enjoy Louis, the only other combination to post a second clear, with a time of 42.74.
Fourth place went to American Eliza Lehrman (Fenom van Klapscheut), who had just a time fault in the decider, coming home in 48.31, with Sweetnam fifth on four faults in 40.00.
Tomorrow sees the week long meeting come to a close with the $300,000 Hampton Classic Grand Prix, which has been given a revised starting time of 12.30pm local time (5.30pm Irish time) due to expected unfavourable weather. Mike Dunne.
